The watch word of America's Walking Club (ava.org) this year is "Walk Long, Stay Strong." This provided the motivation for our members to reach out to friends, family, and acquaintances to encourage them to join the walking community, and to support the community in it's mission to help members live longer, healthier lives. A funny thing happened in the middle of the fund raising campaign: COVID-19. It resulted in a nation wide effort to avoid gathering in groups, as walkers typically do, to "flatten the curve" and starve the virus of unwitting victims. This put a bit of a damper on our group walking efforts. Nevertheless, Panda, my Giant Schnauzer, and I managed to pull off our 8 day, 200km "give-a-woof" walk-a-thon to raise awareness and raise money to support the AVA. Below are the results, a day by day synopsis of how things went, with pictures, companions, and hiccups, all leading to a successful campaign. It's not too late to pledge and donate. AuthorHi, my name is Bob Hall and I joined All Weather Walkers last year and started walking seriously last summer before I retired in August. During my career, I spent several decades hunched over a computer and developed a chronic back ache. When I retired I vowed to take the dog for long walks every day. Guess what? No more back ache! I am doing these challenges to repay AVA for the benefits I have enjoyed. Archives
